The chemical industry +17.6 TWh
The electricity needs of Sweden’s chemical industry is set to more than double, from 4.8 to 10.7 TWh a year by 2030. In addition, the electricity needs the refinery and electrofuels is expected to increase more than twelvefold, from 1.0 to 12.7 TWh a year by 2030.
Increased use of fossil-free electricity and hydrogen in manufacturing processes, and the replacement of fossil raw materials for bio-based ones, are key to the chemical industry’s climate transition. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture and utilization (CCU) are promising, albeit electricity-intensive, technologies that could further increase electricity demand.
