The forest industry +4.6 TWh

Sweden’s pulp and paper industry has largely phased out fossil energy in its production processes and is not expected to increase electricity demand by more than a quarter, from 17.2 to 21.8 TWh a year.

The pulp industry has considerable potential to capture and store biogenic carbon dioxide, so-called bio-CCS. Large amounts of point-source carbon dioxide emissions from biofuels in combination with own electricity production and deepwater ports, suitable for shipping liquid carbon dioxide, make bio-CCS an attractive alternative for the pulp industry.

Increased production of biofuels with bio-CCU, which means that the captured carbon dioxide is used as a raw material, has the potential to become a new forest industry product. The technology requires a lot of electricity and could significantly increase the pulp industry’s electricity use, if deemed profitable.
