Mines +6.4 TWh
The mining industry’s electricity use is projected to more than double, from 4.0 to 10.4 TWh a year by 2030.
The electrification of mining machines and equipment provides considerable climate benefits and can be implemented relatively quickly, for example with the phasing out of fossil fuel powered trucks and other vehicles. This also reduces electricity use as the need to ventilate mine shafts is less.
CCS to capture carbon dioxide from cement production is expected to increase electricity demand by a further 2.1 TWh by 2030, (primarily the excavation segment). However, the main increase in electricity demand for CCS will occur after 2030. Climate-positive concrete would reduce Sweden’s carbon dioxide emissions by three per cent.
