{"id":122,"date":"2024-04-18T16:24:47","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T14:24:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/skgs.org\/english\/?page_id=122"},"modified":"2024-05-21T12:09:38","modified_gmt":"2024-05-21T10:09:38","slug":"the-forest","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/skgs.org\/english\/the-climate-change\/the-forest\/","title":{"rendered":"Forests: the heart of the bioeconomy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"block-core-heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Renewable raw materials underpin the climate transition<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p>Sweden\u2019s forests and forest industries contribute to climate initiatives in three main ways:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"block-core-list-item\">\n<li>Substitution: renewable forest products replace fossil products and reduce emissions caused during production<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-list-item\">\n<li>Carbon sinks: carbon is sequestered in forest products, (e.g. wooden buildings, furniture), growing forests, actively cultivated forest grows better and absorbs more carbon from the atmosphere<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-list-item\">\n<li>Green energy: the forest sector is a net producer of renewable energy<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p>The forestry industry\u2019s major contribution to the transition to a circular bioeconomy requires increased access to biomass from sustainably managed forests. The supply of raw materials creates limits on how much fossil products can be replaced. Healthy, biodiverse forests with high growth rates provide the conditions for the production of traditional products, (sawn timber, pulp and paper), and new innovative wood-based materials and biofuels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p>Roadmap to freedom from fossil fuels<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Roadmap to freedom from fossil fuels<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p>Swedish Forest Industries has developed a number of targets for 2030:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"block-core-list-item\">\n<li>The forestry industry\u2019s share of GDP has doubled from three per cent in 2013 to six per cent in 2030.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-list-item\">\n<li>The market for wooden products has broadened and the value of the deliveries increased \u2013 at least 50 per cent of all new homes and an increased proportion of other buildings are built with wooden frames.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-list-item\">\n<li>Investment in research, innovation and demonstration facilities linked to forests and the forest industry have doubled to SEK 8 billion per year.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-list-item\">\n<li>Forestry industry\u2019s deliveries of bioenergy have increased.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-list-item\">\n<li>Production of biofuels based on forest raw materials has increased; it is believed that they could increase from 1 TWh to 10 TWh.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-list-item\">\n<li>No fossil fuels are used in the work machines used in the forestry industry or in forestry.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fossil-free transport requires large amounts of electricity<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p>The forestry industry\u2019s industrial processes are more than 95 per cent fossil-free. However, transports are largely dependent on fossil fuels. Renewable biofuels and the electrification of transports and machinery have considerable potential to replace diesel.
